Dr. Anders Cohen: A Pioneer in the Field of Spine Surgery

Dr. Anders Cohen has become one of the leading surgeons in spine surgery because of the major contributions he has made to the field. He has devised various procedures that have proven helpful in the treatment of different spinal diseases, such as cervical and lumbar disorders, scoliosis and spondylolithesis.

What Dr. Cohen is really famous for is his use of less invasive and less painful procedures to treat spinal conditions. He uses revolutionary techniques, such as minimally invasive spine surgery to perform spinal fusion, repair herniated discs and correct deformities such as scoliosis. Also known as keyhole surgery, the procedure is done using an endoscope, a thin and telescope-like tool that is inserted through small incisions. The tool is connected to a video camera that allows the surgeon to see the area that needs to be treated.

He is also the first surgeon in New York to have successfully performed a cutting-edge spinal surgery technique called XLIF or extreme lateral interbody fusion. Through this technique, there are no bone removals involved or displacement of any back muscles since the spine is accessed from the side of the body instead of from the back or front. He is also the first New York surgeon to perform the AxiaLIF (Trans1) or the axial lumbar interbody fusion. During the process, damage to the patient’s tissues and spine is minimized and even avoided, as compared to other extremely-invasive procedures. Aside from these cutting-edge procedures, Dr. Cohen also pioneered the use of decompression techniques to cure cervical and lumbar disorders.

Currently serving as the head of the Neurosurgery Department at Brooklyn Hospital Center, Dr. Anders Cohen continues to show his passion and dedication to this field of medicine by continuing to address the needs of his patients, sharing his knowledge to other surgeons through lectures, and by continuing to develop innovative procedures to treat spinal disorders.
